It is on the initiative of Louis XV, impressed by the cartographic work realized in Flanders, that the first geometrical chart of the Kingdom of France is raised. César François Cassini de Thury says Cassini III, wire of Jacques, is charged to complete this work on the scale "of a line percent measuring apparatuses", that is to say 1/86400e. The chart is based on the geodetic network which have just established (of 1683 to 1744) Jean-Domenica Cassini and his/her son Jacques (father of Cassini de Thury).
The chart of Cassini will be used as reference to the cartographies of the principal European nations during first half of the XIXe century. |
