Chart of Cassini

It is on the initiative of Louis XV, impressed by the cartographic work realized in Flanders, that the first geometrical chart of the Kingdom of France is raised.

César François Cassini de Thury says Cassini III, wire of Jacques, is charged to complete this work on the scale "of a line percent measuring apparatuses", that is to say 1/86400e.

The chart is based on the geodetic network which have just established (of 1683 to 1744) Jean-Domenica Cassini and his/her son Jacques (father of Cassini de Thury).

The liftings will start in 1760 with César François Cassini de Thury and will finish in 1789 with his/her son, Jacques Domenica Cassini.La publication will be delayed by the events of the Revolution to be completed only in 1815.

These are four generations of Cassini which will have been devoted to the realization of the chart which deserves to bear today the name of this family.

The chart of Cassini will be used as reference to the cartographies of the principal European nations during first half of the XIXe century.
